Our South-East Asian Department covers the arts of Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Our auctions include textiles from the Indonesian islands, Thai ceramics and bronze images, Burmese lacquer and Buddhist manuscripts, and stone sculpture. Objects date from Indian-influenced sculpture and bronzes from 9th century Java to elaborate wood carvings from Colonial Burma.
Variety of style and form
While much of South-East Asian art was deeply influenced by early contacts with India—particularly through Buddhism and Hinduism—each country’s art has blended these with its own deep-seated indigenous religious and artistic traditions resulting in its own distinctive style. The region includes an extraordinary diversity of cultures.
Textiles and bronzes
Textiles are a dominant feature in South-East Asian art. Our auctions offer exceptional Javanese and Sumatran woven silks, cottons adorned with geometric patterns and folk deities, as well as garments, shawls, and ceremonial hangings. Equally sought after are bronze Buddhas, particularly those from Thailand, admired for their exquisite craftsmanship and aura of serenity and spirituality. Popular in Western interiors since the early 20th century, they remain highly desirable today.
‘I am particularly drawn to Thai Buddha images. They represent the quintessential character of the Buddha—peaceful, refined and other worldly.’

The French connection
French collectors, influenced by their country’s colonial history in Indochina, have long been drawn to Khmer and Cham art (from Cambodia and Vietnam), maintaining a strong presence in the market. The French explorer Henri Mouhot played a pivotal role in introducing Angkor Wat—the world’s largest religious monument—to international audiences and the Musée Guimet in Paris houses one of the world's most important collections of art from the region.
