Sauter signed and inscribed with title and the artist's address on a label on the reverse tempera on board 66 cm by 51 cm; 26 in by 20 in The present work was painted during the Second World War when Sauter was living at The Stocks, Wittersham, Tenterden, Kent. Always interested in flying and aviation he would have witnessed much of the action of the Battle of Britain from this house and this work, with the swirling flight pattern of the dove, may reflect his concerns and hopes for salvation and victory in the battle being fought above his head.
