Theo Mendez lived his entire life in London. The geometric abstraction which formed the core of his artistic practice lends itself beautifully to the two present cityscape works resting, as the compositions do, on the inorganic lines of the architecture. His carefully layered introduction of branches, bushes and trees with their diagonal currents introduces a dynamism characteristic of his practice. This very identifiable manner perhaps reflects his distinguished connection to fabrics. Head of Textile and Design at Camberwell School of Art, his alma mater, for many years Mendez established the department as world leading, and helped launch the careers of Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano, amongst others.
