A SET OF FRENCH TABLE SILVER, TETARD FRERES, PARIS, CIRCA 1930

designed by Valéry Bizouard (1874-1945) in circa 1930, plain slightly flared handles with stepped sides, engraved with monogrammed initials EMB, with circular bowls and angular tines, comprising twelve of each of the following: soup spoons, table forks, ivory handled table knives with steel blades, dessert spoons, dessert forks, teaspoons, coffee spoons, an ivory handled butter knife with steel blade, a pair salad servers, a fish slice, a serving fork, a serving spoon, a serving trowel, a soup ladle and a pair of sugar tongs, steel etched 'TÉTARD Fres / PARIS', silver with maker's and 950 standard marks, 5376g of silver (93 pcs)

Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 25 November 2004, lot 44

See the monthly magazine 'Mobilier et décoration: revue française des arts décoratifs appliqués', Sèvres, 1 January 1930, p.203 for illustrations of similar Bizouard designed 'couverts' for Tétard Frères. These modern angular designs by Bizouard for flatware along with his and Jean Tétard's designs of Art Deco holloware for the table were newly exhibited at the 'Décor de la table' show in 1930 at Musée Galliera. Henri Clouzot praised the various silver manufacturers represented: 'The pieces derive their beauty from frankness of execution, concise form and plain polished surfaces which reflect as in a mirror the light of day or the brilliance of electricity' ('The Studio', October 1930, p.288). It is rewarding to note how Bizouard's design for the present lot is carried through to include the edged ivory handles of the knives, perfectly reflecting the edging on the silver.
