A VICTORIAN SILVER SIFTER SPOON, HENRY JOHN LIAS & SON, LONDON, 1874

Bacchanalian pattern, the pierced fluted bowl with gilt interior, 15.5cm long, 65g

The rare, figural 'Bacchanalian' pattern appears to have been introduced by Rundell, Bridge & Rundell in about 1812 (pieces of this date are held by the Royal Collections) after designs for the company by the artist/designer Thomas Stothard (1755-34), earlier examples predominantly from Paul Storr's workshops.
