A MILITARY TELESCOPE BY ROSS, LONDON, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
INSCRIBED "NO 1 PRESENTED TO SIR DOUGLAS HAIG BY LEOPOLD DE ROTHCHILDE ESQ"
with three-draw construction of dark metal, folding eyepiece cover, the third draw engraved "Ross London No 63796", black leather grip, the objective lens barrel engraved 'No.1 Presented to Sir Douglas Haig By Leopold De Rothschild Esq.', in its leather case embossed with the same text, 29.3 cm folded
The serial number indicates that this telescope was made between 1895-1911 (see Wilkinson and Glanfield 2001).
Another telescope of the same type engraved 'No.2 Presented to Sir Douglas Haig By Leopold De Rothschild Esq.' was sold as lot 4 from the Collection of the late Earl and Countess Haig by Bonhams in December 2023.
