Peruvian-American artist Alberto Vargas (1896-1982) was one of the first artists to perfect the use of the airbrush. He established his reputation as a painter of pin-up girls, his work popularised by American GIs and the US airforce during and after the Second World War. Peter Phillips studied at the Royal College of Art, London with fellow students David Hockney, Allen Jones and R.B. Kitaj. Awarded a Harkness Fellowship he moved to New York, where he exhibited alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist. He now lives in Australia.
