Commenting on Yates' show at the Camden Art Centre in 1980 held simultaneously with a retrospective of the work of John Heartfield, critic John Russell Taylor noted that the artist 'likes low life and saucy ladies and semi-dashing semi-seedy men - a touch of Georg Grosz around the edges, but none the worse for that, since he has his own highly personal twists style for the tail of Cabaret.' (John Russell Taylor, The Times, 23 September 1980)
