Sidney Nolan (1917-1992) explored Australian myth and folklore in his work, re-defining Australian nationalism through the series of twenty-seven works he completed in 1946-47 of the antics of the notorious bushranger and outlaw Ned Kelly. All but one of his Ned Kelly series is in the National Gallery of Art, Canberra. Nolan's work ranged from designing book jackets to set and costume designs for the ballet and opera, first for the Theatre Royal in Sydney and subsequently, after his move to England in 1951, for the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera in London. His first solo exhibition in the UK was at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London in 1957. Nolan was Knighted in 1981.
