THREE INDIAN HIDE SHIELDS (DHAL), 19TH CENTURY

each of circular convex form, the first lacquered over its outer surface with a repeated pattern of foliage centred on a roundel painted in polychrome with further repeated designs of foliage against red and white grounds, the outer border ensuite, fitted with four copper alloy bosses each with foliate edge, the interior painted red with gilt details (enarmes missing); the second painted in polychrome with tigers and antelope around a central roundel, the latter set with four base-metal bosses each with a human mask (enarmes missing); the last painted in polychrome (some surface damage) with tigers in combat with elephants and makara, and with four circular bosses centred on an antelope, the interior with embroidered pad, 65.0 cm, 46.0 cm and 47.0 cm diameter respectively (3)
