A DYAK SWORD (MANDAU), BORNEO, LATE 19TH CENTURY

of characteristic form, with iron single-edged blade engraved with scrollwork along the back-edge and formed with filed mouldings towards the tip, carved bone grip formed as a monster head and bound with rattan at the base, in its rattan-bound wooden scabbard with large rattan loop, and with provision for a further blade or implement (now missing), 66.5 cm overall
