This appears to be a preliminary sketch for the dust jacket of the first 1939 publication by Faber & Faber of A Traveller in Time by Alice Uttley (1884-1976) also illustrated by Phyllis Bray. A popular time travel story, it recounts the visit of a young girl, Penelope, to Thackers Manor in 1934, where she becomes involved in a 16th century plot to rescue Mary, Queen of Scots. Uttley was a prolific British writer of over 100 books, best known for her children's series about Little Grey Rabbit, and Sam Pig.
