Thence by descent to the present owner
The present composition was very possibly inspired by the cove of Durdle Door in Dorset. Bray may have been aware of the Dorset Shell Guide written and illustrated in 1937 by Paul Nash (1889-1946) in which Durdle Door features, having produced herself some commercial works for Shell. Nash lived in Swanage in the mid-1930s and his surrealism and love of nature would have been of significance to Bray.
