A WATER VESSEL (CAMBU), PROBABLY VARANASI, INDIA, CIRCA 1900

on flared rim foot, the bulbous body with everted rim and ropetwist neck, the sides engraved with various Hindu deities, including Surya on his chariot, the Jaganatha trio, Ganesha and avatars of Vishnu, later inscribed copper panel underneath reading (in Swedish): 'from the Hospitals of Borga [Porvoo, Finland], 8.11.1972

This type of vessel is for holding water from the Ganges. For a similar example in the British Museum, see inv. no. 1991,0814.2
