watercolour with pencil 12 x 16.5cm. / 4¾ x 6½in.

It is thought that this picture was inspired by Richmond's close friend Samuel Palmer, who lived in Walton, Surrey. Richmond spent much of his time comforting his old friend and fellow 'Ancient' on his deathbed, as it attested to in Marianne Thornton's letter to Richmond of the 19th June 1881(Royal Academy Archives, GRI/3/576).
