A STANDING LADY, DECCAN, PROBABLY HYDERABAD, 18TH CENTURY

in opaque colours and gold on paper, the figure facing right depicted holding leaves, within a stylised landscape, a short inscription in black ink upper left in devanagiri, upper right with '558', within yellow, black and white ruled margins with a red border decorated with leaf motifs, a further blue border with gold scrolls, folio 22 x 14.5, framed and glazed

Provenance: Collection of Robert Skelton, O.B.E. (1929-2022).

The reverse of the frame applied with various labels. One, presumably indicating the origins of the painting, is of teh Knoedler Gallery of New Bond Street. This has a hand written suggestion that the painting had earlier been owned by Robert Fraser, a renowned Modern Art dealer in the 1960s, sometimes known as 'Groovy Bob', and friend of the Beatles. Skelton added further labels on which he noted down the opinion of various scholars on this painting. 'MZ', presumably Mark Zebrowski, had suggested that it was a work by the 'Jaipur painter'. Sven Gahlin had pointed out comparable works offered by Colnaghi's and in the collection of the Fondation Custodia in Paris.
