ARTHUR BAKER-CLACK (AUSTRALIAN 1877-1955)

Australian-born landscape painter Arthur Baker-Clack began his career as a journalist in Perth before moving to Europe. He studied first in Paris with the French Academic painter and sculptor, Jean-Paul Laurens, and then from 1910 under fellow Australian Rupert Bunny (1864-1947) at the art colony in Etaples in the Pas-de-Calais. In Etaples he married his wife, Edith, who had nursed him during a period of illness. He remained in the region throughout the First World War, despite having to move house following the bombing of his studio. He exhibited widely including at the Salon des Indépendants, Paris and with the London Group led by Walter Sickert in England, a collective of artists that embraced a Post-Impressionist style and captured scenes of everyday life.
