This fine, detailed map of Hanoverian London, drawn by Johann Thomas Kraus, offers a fascinating insight in to the gradual growth of the city during the period, as it extends to Hyde Park Corner in the west, and then to Islington, Stepney, Bermondsey and Lambeth, with a detailed key. In the upper left corner are the Royal Arms of George II, and upper right a German text description of the city.
Building upon Matthäus Merian's 16th century view of London, updated to include much of Wren's remodelling of the city after the Great Fire in 1666, the lower register of the present work displays some interesting and notable developments, including the removal of executed heads on London Bridge and the rebuilt St Paul's cathedral. Fascinatingly the work also carries a certain continental Baroque flavour, with a number of architectural flourishes totally uncommon to Britain, showing the Germanic influence of the map maker.
