A BRONZE FIGURE OF KARUPPARAYAN, SOUTH INDIA, 19TH CENTURY

standing in tribhanga, his right hand raised holding a sickle, his left resting on a club, his hair gathered in a topknot, later wood base, 11cm high

Karupparayan or Karuppaswamy is a South Indian folk deity, thought to be based on a historic character. He is particularly worshipped amongst farming communities in parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala as a protector and upholder of justice.
