IMPERIAL IRAN: A FRENCH SILVER AND GOLD BOX AND COVER, MAISON BOUCHERON, PARIS, CIRCA 1939

circular bun shaped plain silver body, the cover mounted in gold with the crown of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as Crown Prince of Iran, gilt interior, underside inscribed 'BOUCHERON - PARIS', French 18 carat gold and petite guarantie silver export marks and maker's mark for Helluin-Mattlinger, 8.5cm diameter

The marriage with Sunni rites in Cairo of Crown Prince Mohammad Reza (later Shah) of Iran and Princess Fawzia of Egypt (sister of King Fuad) on 15 March 1939 was shortly followed by another ceremony following Shi'ite rites in Tehran. These boxes were apparently given as commemorative presents to guests at the celebrations in Iran. For a pair of Boucheron boxes given to the Dutch Ambassador and probably his wife see Freeman's, Philadelphia, 29 May 2019, lot 240.

The specialist box makers Helluin-Mattlinger produced items for retail by Boucheron, as well as by Lacloche Frères and others, between 1935-1959.
