AN OTTOMAN 28 BORE MIQUELET-LOCK RIFLE (SHISHANA), TURKEY, LATE 18TH CENTURY

with octagonal sighted barrel (some old wear and rust patination) of finely twist damascus pattern rifled with nine spiral grooves and encrusted with gold foliage around the fore-sight and copper-alloy lined barrelsmith’s mark on the top flat at the breech, and retained by seven foliate engraved silver barrel bands, arched double aperture back-sight and tang encrusted with gold foliage, characteristic lock decorated in gold en suite, figured Circassian walnut full stock inlaid with shaped green-stained horn panels enriched with small copper alloy nails and roundels of copper alloy and dark horn, the segmented flared faceted butt and panels around the barrel tang inlaid en suite, the former enriched with a flower-head on both sides and with bands of alternate white horn and wood, the central band forming repeated flower-heads, the latter including a white horn fleur-de-lys, dark horn butt-plate, gold decorated button trigger, green-stained horn fore-end cap inlaid en suite, and original iron ramrod, 81.0 cm barrel
