Dada, known formally as Coex'ae Qgam, was the best-known artist of the Kuru Art Project and one of the most internationally celebrated figures in the history of contemporary San art. Born in the Ghanzi District of Botswana, she first joined the project as a translator, and it was her curiosity about the art-making she observed that led her to begin creating works of her own, works that would go on to be shown across Europe and collected worldwide. Fluent in five southern African languages, she was also a skilled storyteller in the oral tradition. Her linocuts on handmade paper draw on the visual world of the Kalahari, its animals, plants and the spirit beings of San cosmological belief, with an assured simplicity that belies their depth.
