TWO DYAK SWORDS (MANDAU), BORNEO, LATE 19TH/20TH CENTURY

of characteristic form, the first with single-edged blade, perhaps from a bayonet, carved bone grip involving a monsterhead and numerous tusks, rattan binding, in its wooden scabbard with a carved bone plaque at the reverse of the base, accompanying knife with long handle, and woven suspension band with a coin; the second engraved and inlaid with copper alloy pellets along the back-edge, carved wooden grip with rattan binding at the base, in its wooden scabbard with embossed silver bands, the first: 45.3 cm blade (2)
