A JAPANESE GLAIVE (NAGINATA), EDO PERIOD

with a lightweight blade of shizukagate profile, with ridged back and characteristic groove (naginata-hi) (some corrosion and damage to the point and edge of blade) (tang not examined for signature), a plated copper alloy collar (habaki) and reinforcing sleeve with heart-shaped design, the shaft of oval profile and made of Japanese white oak (a few woodworm holes), with six rattan and copper alloy reinforcing bands over a lacquered wooden insert retaining the blade (some bands loose on the shaft), the shaft capped with a pointed ferrule (ishizuki), 227.0 cm overall
