A PRESENTATION SABRE TO CAPTAIN DAVID WIGHT BY THE NEWBATTLE COMPANY OF THE EASTERN REGIMENT OF

A PRESENTATION SABRE TO CAPTAIN DAVID WIGHT BY THE NEWBATTLE COMPANY OF THE EASTERN REGIMENT OF MIDLOTHIAN VOLUNTEER INFANTRY 1806, BY RUNDELL BRIDGE & RUNDELL with curved single-edged blade, etched with the presentation inscription towards the tip, etched and gilt with trophies-of-arms, foliage and the crowned Royal arms on a blued panel on one face and with a further inscription, trophies, GR crowned and a hussar on the other (the bluing worn, areas of patination), gilt-brass hilt cast and chased in low relief (loose, rubbed), comprising a pair of langets decorated with trophies-of-arms centring on a Britannia shield, scrolling foliate quillon, knuckle-guard decorated with an entwined pattern of oak foliage and acorns, back-strap and integral grip in imitation of wire-bound ivory, in its leather scabbard with large silver-mounted gilt-brass mounts engraved and pierced with foliage (the leather replaced, one inner silver mount loose), comprising chape, middle-band and locket each incorporating a central silver panel cast and chased with silver trophies-of-arms in low relief, the inside with vacant silver plaques, and the middle-band and locket each with a ring for suspension, the latter inscribed by the retailer 74.5 cm; 29 3/8 in blade Provenance Charles Bremner Hogg Jackson Collection, sold Butterfield & Butterfield, 15th October 1996, lot 3431 The inscriptions read: "PRESENTED BY THE NEWBATTLE COMPANY OF THE EASTERN REGT OF MIDLOTHIAN VOLUNTEER INFANTRY, TO DAVID WIGHT ESQR THEIR CAPTAIN, AS A MARK OF THEIR REGARD & ESTEEM, 1806" and "Into whose hand this Sword is put its hop't will not fear Bunopart So draw me out I shine so clear and if I strike my foes may fear"
