FREDERICK THRUPP (1812-1895): ARIEL IMPRISONED IN A PINE TREE

a Carrara marble bust, probably 1840s, carved as a boy, his chest tied with pine branches, truncation signed to reverse 'Fredk Thrupp', on waisted socle, 55.5cm high

Thrupp's studio collection at the time of his death is still mostly intact, now held by the Torre Abbey Museum in Torquay, probably the largest single collection of a Victorian sculptor's work and a unique record of a professional sculptor's practices at the time. It seems at least two marble busts of Ariel were executed, since another, which presumably remained in the artist's possession, can be found at Torre Abbey (TORAG:SCM10), as well as a plaster cast. Thrupp exhibited 'Ariel Imprisoned in a Pine Tree' at the Royal Academy in 1844 (Catalogue No.1348) and again at the British Institution in Pall Mall in 1846 (Catalogue No.489).
