A DUTCH SILVER-MOUNTED MUSTARD POT AND CASTER SET

A DUTCH SILVER-MOUNTED MUSTARD POT AND CASTER SET, BENNEWITZ & ZOONEN, AMSTERDAM, 1820s with lozenge cut glass bodies, the mounts with lobed borders and bulbous topped lids, 934 standard, no apparent date letter, maker's marks of both Diederik Lodewijk Bennewitz and Bennewitz & Zoonen, caster 14.5cm high; together with the accompanying Dutch silver mustard spoon, maker's mark poor, no date letter, 19th century, with reeded terminal, 833 standard (3) The Bennewitz family were large and well known manufacturing and retailing silver- and goldsmiths in Amsterdam in the early 19th century. In 1807 Diederik Lodewijk Bennewitz was recommended by the governors of the Guild to be the new assay master since 'He is one of the most skilful and capable masters in our guild, whom we hold in great esteem on account of his comprehensive genius... and who has such an extensive workshop, both in gold and in silver, that one would possibly seek in vain for a second such in Holland'. Together with his partner, the famous retailing firm Bennewitz and Bonebakker supplied the Dutch Royal family, the Emperor Napoleon, the City of Amsterdam and many others, but the company split in 1822; Bennewitz continued with his sons, trading as Bennewitz & Sons.
