In 1989, Christopher Le Brun created the notable portfolio Seven Lithographs. The monochrome prints are united by a strong sense of romanticism and mystery. Le Brun pools black ink across the printing plate, with each image partially obscured by his expressive, calligraphic mark-making. Working intuitively, he allows the composition to emerge through gesture rather than precise representation.
In 2 from the series, a tree trunk is abstracted through elaborate layers of mark-making, while undulating circular forms appear almost like musical notes drifting across the page. In 7 two trees flank a path that winds into the distance. Although Le Brun deliberately veils his subjects beneath dark dashes of ink, the result is not one of chaos but of lyrical rhythm and poetic harmony.
Christopher Le Brun is one of the leading British artists of his generation. Working across painting, sculpture and printmaking, his practice moves fluidly between the figurative and the abstract. He also served as President of the Royal Academy of Arts in London from 2011 to 2019 and was awarded a knighthood for services to the arts in the 2021 New Year Honours.
