AN ILLUMINATED EXEGESIS OF THE QUR'AN, OTTOMAN TURKEY, COPIED BY OSMAN, DATED 1764 A.D.
a copy of the exegesis, or tafsir, of the Qur'an, in Ottoman Turkish, opening with four pages of index, fihrist, the opening double page with an illuminated head piece in gold and colour and borders of scrolling floral motifs in gold, the text in a fine cursive script comprising 33 lines within a broad gold border lined in red and blue, verse markings in gold and annotated in red, approximately 360 ff., the morocco leather binding elaborately decorated with moulded lobed cartouches of formal arabesques heightened with gold, with titled box, folio 32.3 x 18.5 cm., text 21.8 x 10.2 cm.
The calligrapher describes himself as 'Osman, deputy (halife) of the Central Accounting Bureau (muhasebe-i evvel)'.
At the beginning and the end, waqf inscriptions recording the endowment for the ‘sake of the soul’ of Riza Bey, the son of Vecih Pasha. The second of these inscrpitions is dated 24 Jumada I (12)99 (1882).

The auction includes a selection of Islamic tiles and early pottery and a wide range of bronze images and early Indian stone sculptures, paintings and textiles from India and South-East Asia. Highlights include an interesting group of early Thai bronze images of Buddha, an important Kashan ’silhouette ware’ turquoise pottery ewer, and a spectacular pair of silver bottles in the so called ‘coriander pattern’ from Lucknow. There is also an important group of Islamic manuscripts.
