Originally commissioned in marble by the collector and politician Alexander Murray of Broughton (1789-1845) from the sculptor in Rome in 1829, the studio producing five copies, one now in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. Royal Copenhagen started producing from the 1840s a number of biscuit models after Thorvaldsen, particularly the perennially popular Night and Day roundels.
