AFTER BERTEL THORVALDSEN (1770-1844): NAPOLEON I APOTHEOSIS BUST
a Royal Copenhagen biscuit porcelain bust of Napoleon, mid 19th century, modelled with laurel wreath and shield to shoulder, resting on an orb and the outstretched wings of an imperial eagle and to reverse as a palm tree in relief, on square base (chipped) stamped to rear 'ENERET / EN' (Patent), three blue line mark to underside, 24cm high
Originally commissioned in marble by the collector and politician Alexander Murray of Broughton (1789-1845) from the sculptor in Rome in 1829, the studio producing five copies, one now in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. Royal Copenhagen started producing from the 1840s a number of biscuit models after Thorvaldsen, particularly the perennially popular Night and Day roundels.
