A JAVANESE VOLCANIC STONE FRAGMENTARY FIGURE POSSIBLY DEPICTING SIVA, INDONESIA, CIRCA 9TH CENTURY
seated in sattvasana on a lotus throne, his hands resting on his knees, a lotus flower(?) in his left hand 49cm high
Provenance: Collection of a deceased diplomat, thence by descent, thought to have been acquired in the 1960s.
Although at first sight this appears to be a figure of Buddha, the positioning of the hands makes suggests otherwise, and even more telling are indications of two further arms, now missing, and the long hair which still falls onto his shoulders. A plausible comparison is the 9th century figure of Siva found in the Dieng plateau (A. J. Bernet-Kempers, 'Ancient Indonesian Art', Harvard 1959, pl.28).
