A VENETIAN SWORD (SCHIAVONA)

A VENETIAN SWORD (SCHIAVONA), CIRCA 1780 with broad flat tapering blade, signed 'Abraham Stamm' and 'In Solingen' within a short fuller on the respective faces, iron hilt comprising forward-curled quillon, basket-guard incorporating a trellis pattern in the upper portion at the front, and the uppermost bar of the rear pierced with a series of holes, perhaps for a liner, cut with a brief Cyrillic inscription on the reverse, brass shield-shaped pommel (hilt ring missing), and later grip 80cm; 31 1/2in blade A schiavona dated 1781 with a hilt from this group was formerly in the Oldman Collection and is now preserved in the Royal Armouries, Leeds, inv. no.
