A SAFAVID DRAWING OF TWO FIGURES, IN THE STYLE OF RIZA-I ABBASI, PERSIA, CIRCA 1620

ink and gold on paper, the delicate study of two seated figures set within ruled margins in gold and black and a border of gold leafy scrolls on a blue ground, calligraphic cartouches applied around the central image, image 7.5 x 10.5cm., folio 15.2 x 22.3cm

Inscriptions:

The two inner lines of calligraphy is a couplet from a ghazal of Amir Shahi (d.1453). The twelve lines in the border are from the Guy u Chawgan of 'Arifi Haravi (fifteenth century).

Provenance:

Sotheby's, 16th October 1996, lot 64

Hagop Kevorkian Collection, sold Sotheby's, 23rd April 1979, lot 66.

The manner of this drawing can be compared to two drawings in the Biblioteque Nationale, Paris, mounted together, and published in Stchoukine 1964, pl.XXXIV.

The sale includes the collection of Robert Skelton OBE, curator of Indian Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum.  It comprises some exquisite 18th and 19th century Indian paintings and drawings as well as a fine group of modern Indian paintings with works by Shiavax Chavda (1914 - 1990), Francis Newton Souza (1924 - 2002), K Laxma Goud (B. 1940) and Jayashree Chakravarty (B. 1956).  Tiles, Indian bronzes, thewa boxes, a silver gilt ewer, a ‘Koftgari’ pen box and a Mughal carved black jade dagger are also among the lots in this collection.

Also in the same sale is 10th -12th century Persian pottery, a monumental pair of 19th century doors, Persian and Syrian ceramics including tiles, also Iznic tiles from Ottoman Anatolia. Other lots include Indian bronze figures, small furniture, textiles and rugs.
