AN HIDE SHIELD (DHAL), NORTHERN INDIA, 19TH CENTURY

of convex circular form, the outer surface lacquered and painted in gold with a central composite leaf roundel surrounded by fan motifs containing further massed leaves, a band of scrolling foliage around the edge, fitted with pierced iron bosses with silver damascene decoration, the interior painted black, with a small pad, four rings with enarmes, old label with inscription in Indian script, 53cm diam.
