A JAPANESE IRON HELMET (TSUINARI KABUTO), EDO PERIOD, 17TH/18TH CENTURY
with acorn-shaped russet iron skull formed of four plates joined by four vertical external ribbed panels rising to a flower-shaped finial, fitted at the base with a single plate at the rear pierced with pairs of holes for a lining, a further plate at the front and an additional peak plate, the latter applied in the centre with a flower-shaped mon, a pair of up-turned pegs for a maedate, and applied with a plaited silver thread border (small losses)

A helmet of related form is preserved in the Higgins Armory Collection in the Worcester Art Museum (acc. no. 1871).
