HUSAYN WA-IZ AL-KASHAFI (D.1504-5), QUR'ANIC COMMENTARY, PERSIA OR INDIA, 16TH/17TH CENTURY

a manuscript in Persian, with an illuminated opening headpiece, the text composed in 25 lines of concise naskh, with phrases in red and within ruled margins in red, yellow and blue, the morocco leather binding with a moulded design of a symmetrical floral design with a central stem, the front with a calligraphic cartouche, approximately 650 ff., folio 26.8 x 15.6 cm., text 19 x 9.6 cm.

Known as Mavahib-i ‘Aliyya or Tafsir i-Husayni, the text enjoyed remarkable popularity for its clarity of explanation and noteworthy brevity in dealing with the entirety of the Qur'an. Sometimes known as the Tafsir i-Mulla, it was extensively copied across the Persian and Indian world enjoyed for both its accessibility as well as its literary qualities.

Works of art from all parts of the Islamic world, from Morocco in the west, through the Middle East, Persia and Central Asia to muslim China and South East Asia in the East are included in the sale. Objects range in date from the early centuries of Islam to the early 20th century at a wide range of price levels.

The sales also include Khmer, Thai and Javanese sculpture and bronzes, textiles from the Indonesian islands, Thai ceramics, Burmese lacquer and Buddhist manuscripts. Works of art range from the early Indian-influenced styles from 9th century Java to the elaborate carved and lacquered woodwork from Colonial Burma.
