ACHILLE MOLLICA (1832-?1924): NEAPOLITAN FISHER GIRL
an enamelled porcelain plaque, Mollica Ceramiche, Naples, late 19th century, painted by the artist with a barefoot young woman leaning against a fishing boat, signed lower left 'AMollica', in its moulded ebonised wood frame with giltwood slip, plaque 21 x 17.5cm, overall 30 x 26cm
Achille Mollica ran the Mollica Ceramiche business together with his two brothers, Ciro and Alessandro, whilst also becoming known for his finely painted oils on canvas of genre and Orientalist subjects. Confusingly his death date is often quoted as 1885, despite known later dated works and exhibitions.
