Born in Tehran, Akbari uses large scale photography, film and video to create visually arresting imagery that addresses the treatment of women and their role in society. Exhibiting alongside Iranian artist Jamshid Bayrami at Xerxes Fine Art in 2008, the work of both artists explored themes of identity within Iranian society (see lot 85). A self-portrait, He is Mania. She is Mania. He is Mania considers the artist's identity as a transient and fluid state, employing traditional markers of gender, as manifested in Iran.
