‡A RARE 120 BORE FLINTLOCK BOX-LOCK POCKET PISTOL WITH TUTENAG BARREL, ACTION AND MOUNTS BY MORTIMER, LONDON, TOWER PRIVATE PROOF MARKS, BIRMINGHAM SILVER HALLMARKS FOR 1776 with turn-off two-stage cannon barrel engraved with a band of foliage at the breech, engraved action decorated with border ornament and scrolls carried by rococo foliage, the scrolls respectively signed 'Mortimer' and inscribed 'London', engraved tang, highly figured rounded walnut butt profusely inlaid with silver wire scrolling tendrils, flowers and rococo shells within a wrigglework frame, silver mounts comprising grotesque mask butt-cap and escutcheon engraved with the owner's initials 'JH', and tutenag trigger-guard engraved with a diamond-shaped panel on the bow 3.5 cm; 1 3/8 in barrel Provenance William Guthman, sold Bonhams & Butterfields 12th October 2006, lot 5.
