KHWAJA 'ABDULLAH ANSARI (D.1088), MUNAJAT, PROBABLY AFGHANISTAN, DATED 1883
a manuscript in Persian, a frontispiece of nasta'liq in blue within an elaborate roundel in gold and colour on a pale green panel, an opening double page with headpiece of scrolling arabesques in gold on a blue ground, the text composed in five lines on a green ground with interstitial floral scrolls on gold with ruled margins around a border of lobed cartouches in blue with gold floral scrolls emanating, 34 ff., folio 30.8 x 20.1 cm., text 20.1 x 12.7 cm.
Perhaps the most famous work of Abu Isma’il Abdullah ibn Abu Mansour, the Munajat, or Supplications, also known as Khwaja Abdullah Ansari and Ansari Hiravi, it comprises a series of supplications God inspired by the authors sufi beliefs. Khwaja Abdullah Ansari is considered amongst the greatest of Persian mystics and scientists.

The auction includes a selection of Islamic tiles and early pottery and a wide range of bronze images and early Indian stone sculptures, paintings and textiles from India and South-East Asia. Highlights include an interesting group of early Thai bronze images of Buddha, an important Kashan ’silhouette ware’ turquoise pottery ewer, and a spectacular pair of silver bottles in the so called ‘coriander pattern’ from Lucknow. There is also an important group of Islamic manuscripts.
