A SWORD IN VIKING 9TH/EARLY 10TH CENTURY STYLE

A SWORD IN VIKING 9TH/EARLY 10TH CENTURY STYLE, 19TH/20TH CENTURY with broad blade (pitted, the tip with a rust perforation) and hilt of iron comprising stout upper and lower guards, the former shorter than the latter, both of lenticular form in plan view with transversely ridged faces covered overall with a continuous series of vertical silver coloured wires (the upper guard with some losses), the upper and lower surfaces of the lower guard showing the remains of brass coloured plating, and the upper guard pierced at each side with a vertical hole for the attachment of a missing pommel 75.2cm; 29 5/8in blade The hilt when complete would almost certainly have been of Petersen's type H or I, recorded from the late 8th century to the mid-10th century. See I. Pierce 2002, pp. 18-19 & 48-61. Single-edged swords with this type of hilt are preserved in the Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen, nos C 24500 & 24554.
