Guthrie and Co. was the first British trading company in South East Asia, founded by the Scot, Alexander Guthrie, in Singapore in 1821, its primary activity being the management of rubber and palm oil plantations. In the 1980s it became Malaysian owned, and following various mergers and takeovers continues today as a division of Malaysia's largest company, Sime Darby, which is itself a company with a Scottish background.
