Legrand's paintings featured all walks of Parisisan life during the Belle Epoque, especially the nightlife of the day. His etchings and drawings were very much in the same vein as those of Toulouse-Lautrec, and during his career he created over three hundred prints of these scenes. He attracted public controversy for his subject matter, being tried for obscenity and eventually convicted for failing to pay a fine. His most famous work was his illustrations for Gil Blas, a magazine which devoted an issue to the can-can dance and sold 60,000 copies in 1891.
