HENRI LOUIS BOUCHARD (1875-1960): JEUNE FILLE AU LEVRIER

a French Art Deco dark patinated bronze group of a young female nude standing before a greyhound, produced for Arthur Goldscheider's La Stèle, Paris, circa 1925, signed in the bronze to terrace 'h. Bouchard' and with 'LA STELE' seal and number '4' to side of oblong base, 59cm high

Henri Bouchard started turning to a more simplified decorative style around 1913, his works often featuring young women. Greyhounds were another favoured theme, having exhibited a group of greyhounds in the 1912 Salon d'Automne, the artist combining the two themes for this model in 1920. He was a member of La Stèle, the group founded to promote the work of progessive sculptors by the 'Editeur d'Art' Arthur Goldscheider (1874-1948) in the 1920s. In 1923 Bouchard executed a marble version of his 'Jeune Fille au Lévrier', which remained in his studio and later studio museum until moving to his birth-town when acquired by the Musée des Beaux Arts, Dijon, in 2012 (Inv. No.2021 5-1).
