of regulation pattern, with bright fullered blade (some rust patination) double-edged at the point of flattened diamond section, nickel-plated hilt with characteristic copper alloy mounts on the guard including crowned foliate ‘RHG’, all within a border of twelve domed copper alloy studs, chequered copper alloy pommel, wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, and retaining its whitened buff leather liner, and burgundy leather and bullion sword-knot, in its nickel-plated scabbard (some surface rust and minor denting) with copper alloy chape and reeded suspension mounts, the latter each with suspension ring, and complete with its brown leather storage bag, the lid tooled ‘A’ next to a crown, 94.0 cm blade

The Wilkinson sword records state sword no. 40092, a Royal Horse Guards pattern, was sold to Lord Anglesey, Royal Horse Guards, 13th May 1904.

Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey (1885-1947) briefly served in the Royal Horse Guards before his election as Mayor of Burton upon Trent from 1911 to 1912. He rejoined the Royal Horse Guard during the first month of the First World War and was sent to France but was invalided out. He returned to serve as aide-de-camp to Sir John Maxwell, the General Officer Commanding Egypt – for which he was decorated with the Order of the Nile (4th class) in 1918 – and to Sir Willkiam Birdwood in Gallipoli. He went on to serve as Assistant Military Secretary to the General Officer Commanding in Ireland in 1916 and served in the Home Guard during World War II. He was Lord Chamberlain to Queen Mary from 1922 until his death in 1947.
