AN 1845 PATTERN INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD RETAILED BY MEYERS & MORTIMER, CONDUIT ST.

HANOVER SQRE., LONDON, MID-19TH CENTURY

of regulation pattern, with slightly curved fullered blade (some old staining, the cutting-edge with some file marks on one side) double-edged at the point, of flattened diamond section, the forte on both sides etched with crowned ‘VR’ cypher between symmetrical foliage, the ricasso with retailer’s details on one side and ‘PROVED’ stamp centred on foliage on the other, gilt copper alloy hilt incorporating crowned ‘VR’ cypher above union foliage in an oval, and retaining its leather liner and red cord and bullion sword-knot, folding inner-guard, and wire-bound fishskin-covered grip (wire slightly loose), in its black leather scabbard with linear engraved ormolu mounts and two suspension rings, the locket with foliate frog-button, and retaining much of its gilding, 82.0 cm blade
