A RARE INDO-PERSIAN SILVER-MOUNTED SHAMSHIR, LATE 18TH CENTURY

with curved single-edged blade (minor old patch of rust patination) of finely watered wootz steel, the forte on one side inlaid in copper alloy with two calligraphic cartouches (some wear), hilt comprising quillon-block decorated in black enamel on both sides with a central arrangement of flowering foliage within pairs of petals and borders of repeated fronds, pointed langets and quillons with button terminals en suite, grip-strap and faceted pommel enamelled with running foliage, the latter with pierced and enamelled suspension loop carrying a pair of suspension chains linked to the forward quillon terminal, bevelled horn grip-scales secured by two transverse pins each with enamelled fluted shaped washers, and silver bullion wrist-strap, in its wooden scabbard covered in blue velvet (incomplete, plush worn off) with silver locket, deep chape and suspension mounts all en suite with the hilt, 82.0 cm blade
