AN EAST EUROPEAN WAR-HAMMER (OBUCH), 17TH CENTURY, HUNGARIAN, POLISH, OR BALKAN

the iron head comprising waisted octagonal head balanced by a robust beak-shaped fluke, circular socket with rounded projection above and below on both sides, and decorated overall in Ottoman fashion with encrusted chased silver arabesques and symmetrical foliage, all within beaded silver borders and highlighted with silver pellets, on leather-covered wooden haft of circular section seamed along one side and with tubular copper alloy mounts chased with spiral foliate bands. 17.3 cm head

A strikingly similar war hammer decorated in the same manner was donated to the National Hungarian Museum by Count Gyula Keglevich in 1865. See Tibor S.
