with 17th century blade of sharply tapering flattened diamond section, the central fuller on both sides of the forte incised ‘TOMAS DAIELES’ between double cross marks, the hilt of characteristic form including dished ovoidal guard cast and chased in low relief with stars and bright-cut clusters, all between beaded and crimped borders (pommel possibly an old replacement), the underside of the guard engraved with crowned thistles and ‘DUM SPIRO SPERO’, 71.3 cm blade
