◉ A SOUTH INDIAN CHILLANUM, PROBABLY 17TH CENTURY
of russet iron, the tapering recurved double-edged blade with converging double fuller over most of its length forming a medial ridged over both sides, the forte retaining some silver-damascened decoration and pierced with an elephant’s head on each side, waisted X-shaped hilt with central compressed spherical moulding, and beaked ivory pommel-scales (old splits and staining) secured by two rivets, 29.0 cm blade
A related example, formerly in the George Cameron Stone Collection, is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no. 36.25.747).
